Genetic Screening

Testing genes sounds like something out of a science fiction novel. Genetic testing can give you an idea of your risk or your child’s risk of developing certain conditions. Genetic disorders are caused by abnormalities in your DNA. Your parents pass their genes on to you in the form of chromosomes.

Thanks to advances in genetics, doctors now have the ability to understand how certain illnesses pass from generation to generation. Each person has a unique set of chemical blueprints that determines how his or her body looks and functions. These blueprints contain DNA. Specific segments of DNA that contain the instructions for making specific body proteins are called genes. If your DNA contains a mutation, your cells may create proteins that don’t work properly. If this occurs with a protein that plays a critical role in your body’s functioning, you could develop a medical condition.

Genetic problems can happen for many different reasons. Now, genetic testing has developed enough so that doctors can pinpoint defective or even missing genes.
