Fertility Medication
Infertility Treatment -
- Infertility is a disease of the reproductive system that impairs the body’s ability to perform the basic function of reproduction.
- Most authorities define infertility as having been unable to become pregnant after one year of unprotected intercourse.
- Approximately 10 percent of couples are affected by infertility.
- While there may be multiple reasons a couple is infertile, about 40 percent have male factor infertility. In 30 percent of cases pathology is found in the man alone.
- Medical advances, however, have brought about choices that greatly improve the chances of conceiving ones own biological offspring.
When researching infertility medications, it’s best to speak with a qualified fertility specialist about what is right for you. The most commonly used infertility medications are:
- Clomiphene Citrate (Clomid, Serophene) is a non-steriod antiestrogen that “tricks” the brain into thinking there is less estrogen around.
- Human Menopausal Gonadotropins hMG) is a pituitary peptide hormone directly stimulates the ovaries.
- Urofollitropin (FSH) is another petutitary peptide hormone that directly stimulates the ovaries.
- Human Chorionic Gonadrotropin hCG) is a peptide hormone that triggers ovulation. It comes from the urine of pregnant women usually.
- Progesterone is a steroid hormone produced by ovary and placenta that supplements levels of hormones naturally produced in the last half of the menstrual cycle and in pregnancy.
