For many couples who want to be parents struggling with fertility
problems is common, fertility
drugs are the first step in treatment.
Each year millions of women are prescribed the fertility
drugs clomiphene and gonadotropins.
The way that these fertility
drugs work is that they cause ovulation.
By stimulating hormones Clomiphene causes your brain to tell
your ovaries to produce an egg while Gonadotropins directly
stimulate your ovaries to produce the egg. Most of the time
this is all that needs to be done to become pregnant.
Many of the fertility
drugs in this category have been used safely and successfully
for over 30 years. Like many other fertility solutions, such
as in vitro fertilization, fertility drugs can increase your
chance of multiple births.
About 10 percent of women who take fertility
drugs have multiples (mostly twins), as do 10 to 40 percent
of women who take gonadotropins.
